The Goad

September 15, 2009

The sharpest goad is my surest friend

and stern rebuke the sweetest gift

as a blind man quicker heeds the sharper hedge

or the reckless child a louder call;

so my soul, when pricked

by your strong and guiding hand

heeds what it would oft’ ignore

and thus is saved from such ruinous ends

and brought safely to heaven’s shores.
